Description
Kokeshi (こけし, 小芥子), are simple wooden Japanese dolls with no arms or legs that have been crafted as a toy for children. This set of two Kokeshi dolls were hand made by Japanese wood carving artisans of Shinchi Shuraku during the middle of the Edo period (1600-1868) to be sold to people who were visiting the hot springs of Togatta in Zao.
They are hand painted with lines to define the face and the body painted with floral motive, then covered with a layer of wax. Each doll is marked with the signature of the artist in the bottom or back. This set of Kokeshi dolls measure 36cm x 10cm and 30cm x 7.5cm.
The dolls are in good original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Many people today believe that Kokeshi dolls can bring good luck and they are used as charms. Maybe these wooden dolls will be your lucky charm?!
